How To Deep Clean Your Oven (Including Between The Glass)

When you love your oven but hate cleaning it

Hey y’all! Ovens are tricky appliances aren’t they? One day they are new and the next? It looks like a bomb went off inside. How does this happen so quickly? Depending on how often you use your oven will depend on the state of it…of course! But if you’re here then you’ve probably reached your wit’s end but that’s okay! We’re here for you!

How did my oven get this dirty, anyway?

Before we get into the cleaning, let’s try to deep dive into why ovens get dirty and how to prevent this in the future. The quick answer to hy ovens get so dirty is your food. Duh! But, really it’s the splatters of mac & cheese, sprays from Monday’s delicious roast and the squirts from last week’s curry chicken. This grease, when ignored gets CAKED ON. And the longer you wait to clean it, the worse it gets. Foods that are high in fat are the number one offenders for grease on oven walls so make sure you are covering pans with lids or foil.

Another way to ensure your oven stays clean is to clean up spills as quickly as you can. Now we don’t recommend sticking your hand in a hot oven but make sure to wipe up spills as soon as the oven has cooled down. Leaving stains for too long will ensure the spills “cooks” and makes clean up that much tougher.

Lastly, there are great tools out there that help to keep your oven clean. A spill tray works like magic in catching grease and food particles from landing on oven floor. We recommend silicone oven tray.

So, to recap:

  • Use your lids!

  • Clean as you go

  • Use spill trays

Now time for the DEEP clean:

First you want to remove the oven racks. Sprinkle some baking soda in oven and spray with any natural all purpose cleaner. Now, back to those pesky oven racks. Some recommend soaking in the tub but I prefer using pumice stones. Pumice stones work amazinglyyy on oven doors and walls. But it must be WET. Just use some elbow grease to attack those burn marks and like magic..its gone! We don’t like harsh chemicals over here so next we take our eco friendly dish soap and a hard sponge (like a Scrub Daddy) and finishing cleaning the racks. Next, you want to take that same sponge to wipe up the oven door, walls and glass.

We must be done, right?? Nope.

Nine times out of ten, there are stray grease spills in between your oven door glass. Now we have seen hacks with yardsticks but all you’ll need is a screwdriver! Always read your owner’s manual for your specific appliance. You’ll be able to separate the glass from the door and clean. Using a scraper tool or razor, remove the caked on grease and finish cleaning. Once you’ve screwed the door back together, you can marvel at you like-new oven!

To recap, you’ll need:

  1. Your oven’s owner’s manual (listen to them, not us!)

  2. Microfiber towel

  3. Putty Tool or razor

  4. Natural Glass Spray

This may seem like a lot of work but the reward is a sparkly oven with better-tasting food. Most appliance companies recommend that you deep clean your oven every 3 to 6 months.
